Milton Erickson has been highly influential in the field of hypnotherapy and it is true that this style of hypnotherapy is the most studied on a global basis. He also studied family therapy and language patterns. By using indirect suggestion during a session, he realised that it could lead to behavioural changes that were therapeutic for his clients. Encouraged, he began to use symbols and metaphors, contradictions, and antidotes so to influence behaviour. This was far more successful than if giving his patients direct orders.
